TruexCullins

Downtown Block Concept Design

Burlington, Vermont

This conceptual study reimagines the western portion of the former Burlington Square Mall as a vibrant, mixed-use development that activates Church Street, Cherry Street, and the restored St. Paul Street. TruexCullins developed conceptual planning studies, a zoning analysis, and 3D visualizations for this transformative project.

The project included a boutique hotel and conference center, multi-level above-ground parking, interior and street-facing retail, and residential units that bring energy and density to downtown. Discussions with UVM considered integrating much-needed living and medical center office space into the project.

The design features a solid brick base that grounds the building in Burlington’s historic fabric, while upper levels transition to a lighter metal and glass expression. Stepped massing and vegetated terraces soften the scale and create inviting outdoor spaces. The project’s prominent Church Street façade balances transparency and solidity, offering a welcoming presence in the city’s most iconic pedestrian corridor.
