Construction Underway on $95M UVM Multi-Purpose Events Center

by Tom Karlhuber, March 4, 2020

Many longtime UVM alumni and UVM sports fans have fond memories of hockey games at Gutterson Fieldhouse or basketball games at Patrick Gymnasium. For over 50 years, this group of buildings was the heart of University of Vermont Athletics, built in 1963 when UVM’s student population was 3,500.

Now, these aging facilities are being given the star treatment of their very own. Construction is underway on the University of Vermont Multi-Purpose Center, set to transform the Patrick-Forbush-Gutterson Athletic Complex into a state-of-the-art home for varsity athletics. With a new basketball arena and events center, the expanded facility will serve a 21st century student body of over 13,000 and create a hub for health, wellness and fitness for the entire campus.

In 2017 TruexCullins joined a team of designers and engineers to help UVM realize this important project. In early 2018, TruexCullins took a primary role and is now leading the project forward through construction.

CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

The TruexCullins design team is working closely with our engineering consultants to maintain an ambitious construction schedule and allow for seamless operation of varsity training and competition during construction.

Demolition, sitework, and structural reinforcement of Gutterson Fieldhouse was completed first, and construction of the new Events Center began in June 2019. Maintaining building integrity and student safety continue to be the top priorities throughout this work.

The foundation is being laid for the new basketball arena. Structural piers required underground drilling, deep into bedrock. Concrete is now being poured and steel will soon be coming to the site. When that happens, the structural frame will start to rise!

A POSITIVE PRESENCE

The new Tarrant Center will be home to the UVM basketball programs and will complement the historic Gutterson Fieldhouse with a dramatic sweeping roof. A spine of services will act as a main organizing element and will serve both sides, hockey and basketball. Shared amenities include concessions, locker rooms, and the Victory Club overlooking both arenas at the upper level.

In the existing buildings, athletic support will be expanded and services reconceived. Future athletes will find new athletic training and hydrotherapy facilities, renovated office suites, new media and press support, locker rooms, a film and media lecture room, and a modern AV system integrated throughout.

RECREATION & WELLNESS ON THE HORIZON

The Multi-Purpose Arena is the first phase of a multi-faceted project. Following the completion of the basketball arena, attention will shift to the development of the Recreation & Wellness portion of this project. It is a top priority to encompass the needs of both varsity athletics and student wellness. When completed, this Multi-Purpose Center will advance athletic achievement while offering a holistic vision of student health, wellness and recreation.
